High altitude starts to have an effect on our bodies from between 1,500m – 2,000m (4921ft – 6561ft) when our bodies start to react differently to make up for the changes in oxygen levels.

So, as you go higher the air pressure gets lower (the air gets ‘thinner’) so that for every breath there will be less oxygen for your body. Your body gradually adapts to getting less oxygen – you breathe faster and deeper and the body produces more red blood cells. This takes time so this is why if you go from low to high alitude too quickly, you may feel symptoms of altitude sickness until your body acclimatises.

Raimbow mountain is located at an altitude of 5100 metres (16, 700ft) and it is common for many visitors to experience some mild symptoms of altitude sickness in this place, or ‘soroche’ as it is known locally. It’s hard to tell if you will be affected by altitude sickness as some people can be more susceptible than others regardless of age, sex or physical condition

1 WEATHER – You have to be prepared for the weather conditions. You can heard that it would be cold and that it would be at an extremely high altitude, but sometimes you have to be ready even for 7 HOURS of snow. Roughly 30 minutes into the hike, till the end, it snows. Sometimes it snows more and more and when it starts to lighten up, it starts rain. its EXTREMELY rare weather, but please dress in layers because it will be cold regardless. Even if you checked the weather forecast before going and it was supposed to be a clear day, but when you’re that high up, be prepared for any kind of weather.

Due to the heavy snow, sometimes you will be unable to see ANY colors of the mountain. It can be disappointing, but the view can be still breathtaking.

2) ALTITUDE – Its difficult. Even if you are a pretty active life back at home you think you could handle this, but the air makes it very hard to breathe. Every step that you take, you feel like the wind is knocking out of you. Take your time, practice your breathing, and build up your endurance!

3) GET THE HORSE –  That horse quite literally can save you out there in the mountains, in the freezing cold weather. Makesure that the horse will only take you on the straight paths, you have to walk all the steep parts, but its a lifesaver if you are no very well.

4) THINGS TO BRING: gloves, beanies, water, snacks, wipes (squat toilets, so good to clean hands after), waterproof jackets, sunscreen!, and good hiking shoes. Optional: waterproof case for your phone or a poncho.

This it would be one of the most incredible experiences of your life. You’ll get to meet the natives of Peru and really immerse yourself in their culture and it’s a fascinating thing to experience. Just bring appropriate gear and clothes and you’ll be fine.

Chaski Green hightly reccomend to have TRAVEL INSURANCE THAT COVERS ABOVE 4000m / 13, 100ft.

Altitude sickness can be a very serious illness so before travelling to Cusco and doing Raimbow mountain consult your doctor particularly if you have any heart, lung or other severe health problems as not all people can travel to Cusco or the Sacred Valley due to the altitude. However, do bear in mind that almost three million people from all over the world visit Cusco and do Raimbow mountain each year with only a small percentage suffering from altitude sickness.
